“I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write.” 2 Thessalonians 3:17
I’ve never met anyone who selected this text as a “life verse” but who knows, maybe one of these days someone will. Apparently, there were letters being circulated among some of the early churches that claimed to be from the Apostle Paul (and perhaps a few other apostles as well), that were fraudulent. Paul used an assistant at times to do the actual writing of his letters (called an amanuensis), but Paul would put his signature at the end so those receiving the letter would know that this one actually came from him.
This speaks to the issue of: how do you know what to believe? Recently, someone, claiming to be me, emailed a member of the church asking for an electronic copy of our church directory. It wasn’t me, and thankfully, the directory never made it into the reach of the nefarious impersonator, who would likely have used it to prey on our members. Be vigilant and know that there are people who know that we tend to let our guard down with one another and if they can take advantage of that, they can do much harm to us. If you get a suspicious email claiming to be from someone in the church or in leadership, absolutely call the church to verify its legitimacy.
Technology can be manipulated and with billions of people having access to social media, billions of people are reporters. A.I. provides incredible tools to create videos that look real and there are all sorts of sources that claim to be reporting news on the war in Iran that blatantly contradict other information and claims. “Did you hear that….” can be followed by just about anything, because just about anything is being stated as being true.
Last week I gave you a challenge: No phone before Bible. In other words, do not start your day with world news until you have given your soul a reality check with God’s news. When we are involved in another war, it is tempting to hang on to every report and briefing. But remember, God’s Word will ground you in hope and provide clarity in a world that has competing claims and confusing announcements. There are so many agendas, so many platforms, so many claims, and so many voices. We have all been lied to at one time or another, but never by God.
Keep calm and carry on, is more than a British motif, it is our response to knowing that the God who controls all things, is carrying out his good purpose no matter what. We can relax in that.
Grace and peace,
Bob
