Recently, Cathi took our granddaughter, Clare, to get her ears pierced. This was going to be a sweet event shared between the two of them. However, after getting to the business that was going to do the piercing, Cathi was informed that the biological parent of the minor had to sign-off on this in person. Our daughter-in-law had to then drive across town and sign the form so that Clare could get her ears pierced. A worker told Cathi that without that signature the worker would be subject to a fine of $25,000 and Cathi could be fined $25,000 as well. That law makes perfect sense and we are grateful for it. But, there is a law that is being proposed that does not make any sense at all. Proposal 3. Proposal 3 needs to be defeated.

Proposal 3 is a proposal to amend the state constitution in order to establish new individual right to reproductive freedom. This proposal is not about protecting existing rights. It is a radical proposal that would put into our state constitution the right to abort babies as well as repeal or alter dozens of state laws, including the relationship of parents and children. If Proposal 3 passes, then while a parent has to provide written consent for a child under 18 to get a tattoo, brand, or piercing, if that same child was a minor who was pregnant, that child could get an abortion and the parents never be informed, much less give consent. Does that make sense?

But, it’s a baby.

The bottom line is this: Proposal 3 is morally wrong in that it makes the killing of babies legal and I believe that we have a responsibility to honor God by seeking to protect and promote the sanctity of human life. We know that defeating this proposal will not be the last word on this by a long shot and if this proposal is defeated, it does not change the hearts and values of people who seek the right to kill unborn children. We know that the gospel does that. But God has changed our hearts and we recognize and treasure life as being from God and for God. Every human being is formed and made in the image of God and we are right to promote that, especially for those who cannot speak up for themselves.
