We have been able to offer many internships through the years to students interested in ministry. One of our interns, Jon Allen, was just hired to be the youth pastor at Lakes Bible Church in Walled Lake, MI. Caleb Emlet is an intern who is a full-time student at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. Dylan DeSchaepmaster will be doing an internship here in the fall in addition to his part-time responsibilities in Children’s Ministry. Additionally, this summer we are very happy to have Isaac Streetman doing an internship as well. This morning he answered a few questions that I had for him.
Me: How long have you been part of Cornerstone?
Isaac: I started attending in the 4th grade (about 10 years ago). My family started attending on Mother’s Day 2015.
Me: You have an interest in ministry. When did this become a thing for you and how has it been encouraged and affirmed?
Isaac: During my 1st semester at Liberty University, God laid pastoral ministry clearly on my heart. I was in another program at school that I did not enjoy and there was an opportunity to switch my major. After some conversations with my parents, Johnny Norbeck, and my advisor, they all encouraged me to pursue ministry. Since that time, the church leadership here at Cornerstone and the church leadership I serve under in Virginia, have continually encouraged me to keep on this course. During this time my heart for lost people has continued to grow as well.
Me: You said that you are a student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. How far are you in your undergraduate program and what are you majoring in?
Isaac: I’m a little more than halfway done. I have 4 semesters left. I am working on a Bachelor of Science in Pastoral Leadership with a minor in expositional preaching and church planting. I’m really excited to start homiletics this fall.
Me: You are doing an internship here at Cornerstone this summer. What have you been told this will look like?
Isaac: I’m going to be serving as an intern working closely with youth ministries and counseling. In other words, I will do whatever Johnny tells me to do and whatever Dave Dunham tells me to do and then whatever you (Bob) tell me to do. Moving forward this will help me by gaining experience that I will put to use in my next semester at school. I have a new role as a Resident Shepherd (Resident Assistant who focuses on spiritual needs) on my hall where I will have oversight of about 55 guys. I want to serve them humbly and effectively.
Me: You did some interning here last summer. What was that like?
Isaac: I got to spend a lot of time observing you, which gave me a better understanding of the role of a pastor and the day-to-day responsibilities. I was able to participate in sermon prep, hospital visits, and member interviews. This helped confirmed some desires I have for pastoral ministry.
Me: Your parents are members here. Tell me about your family.
Isaac: My parents are Paul and Heidi Streetman. Growing up they made church a priority and they were consistent in their walk with Christ. They talked faithfully about Christ. They are two of the hardest working people I know and they are the greatest and most visible encouragements in my life. They love and support me and my three older siblings very well. People may know my mom from the music ministry. She plays piano and has led the choir at times.
Welcome Isaac!
Grace and peace,
Bob
